Disappointing Products | Products I Won’t Repurchase

So it seems that I love to rave about my favourite products on this blog of mine. This of course is fine, but I thought it would be beneficial if I also started to speak about some disappointing products that I don’t care for as much.

I don’t know about you, but I love to read these types of posts. While it’s great to hear about fantastic products that are, well, fantastic, I believe it’s important to be honest all around and also share things that are not so fantastic, and didn’t work for me.

Please note that this is not me bashing any product or brand. In fact all brands mentioned in this post have products that I absolutely love. It just that some things I didn’t love as much. Everyone is different and looks for different things in products. What works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. I also think that it would be helpful for those with a similar skin tone and skin type to myself to be aware of products that didn’t work for me, as it’s likely they won’t be fond of them either.

A bit about me:

Skin tone: Pale, very pale. Put a piece of paper next to me and you probably won’t be able to tell the difference.

Skin type: Combination/oily – Oily t-zone with dry patches that like to pop up every now and then, especially when the weather’s cold.

Now we’ve got that out of the way let’s get into the disappointing products…

Disappointing Products

Maybelline “Pumped Up! Colossal Volum’ Express” Mascara

I’ve come to the realisation that I’m quite picky when it comes to mascara. I find one mascara that is absolutely mind blowingly amazing and then nothing else can compare.

I bought this mascara on a whim a while back, and unfortunately it didn’t do it for me. It’s not a “bad” mascara, just one that didn’t reach the standard that other mascaras have set for me.

This mascara was featured in a Shop My Stash post a few months back, and I tried really hard to use it and like it but it just didn’t work for me.

Kink free hair ties

When I saw these promoted on social media, I thought that all my prayers had been answered.

I wouldn’t say my hair is thick, but I have quite long hair, and a lot of it. This means I have to use two-three hair ties to keep my hair up throughout the day. Inevitably, this leaves kinks in my hair.

So, while in Sportsgirl one day, I bought some kink free hair ties. Yes, they don’t leave kinks in my hair, but the sheer weight of my hair is too much. It may just be these particular ones, but they fall out of my hair not even 30 minutes after tying it up – not ideal.

If you know any other brands of kink free hair ties that don’t fall out, please let me know because I really want these to work.

Nair Precision Wax Wand

I bought this with the intention of getting rid of those pesky eyebrow hairs, and the peach fuzz that forms a moustache on my upper lip.

In theory this thing is fantastic. No need to heat it up, a tiny, slanted wand to swipe a thin layer of wax over the area, place a mini wax strip over the wax, rip it off, and VOILA – smooth skin.

In reality, in my experience, it’s a bit of a different story. Drag the wand over the skin to create a sticky, hard layer of goop on the skin, slap a strip on the gunky layer, rip it off, and you’re left with sticky residue all over your skin. Oh, and the hair is still there.

Nivea Regenerating Night Cream

In the past I’ve had difficulty finding a night cream that I like. This night cream, like others, is just a bit too much for me.

Despite being for normal to combination skin, it’s quite thick and heavy, and due to my combination skin type it just doesn’t gel with me.

Rather than absorbing into my skin, it’s too thick and just sits on the surface of my skin. I think this would be great if you have drier skin, but unfortunately, it’s not for me.

There are all my disappointing products! If you have used any of these products and had a more positive experience with them please let me know. Maybe I can try using them differently and make them work!

What are some products you found disappointing?

  1. I haven’t even bothered trying the kink free hair ties. My hair is down to my belly button as it quite thick and heavy so it struggles handling a thick hair bobble as it flops around everywhere. (Gyms are a nightmare, when I run I have to keep fixing my hair so often). So I am also on the hunt for decent hair bobbles that can hold my hair and stop kinks in it.

  2. Great post! It’s always interesting to see what products didn’t work for some and the reasons too. I haven’t tried these products before, but I have tried the Nair wax strips for upper lip and sometimes it was good and other times it was crap. Actually one time I had my skin rip off! Still have a bit of a scar but it looked much worse at the time, it was so bad my mum said that if I wanted to I did not have to go to school the next day. Anyway, I’ve just ended up doing laser which is so much better for me.

  3. I’ve never actually tried any of these, however my skin is always super dry & I always get along with Nivea products, so I may have to try out that night cream. I used to love the No7 night cream but then never repurchased it and have been using a normal moisturiser ever since, so maybe I’ll treat myself to this with winter months coming up & my rubbishy dry skin making its comeback!! Super helpful post πŸ’—

  4. I love your honesty in this post! I’ve seen posts of this style in the past that turn into bashing a brand/product without reason – it’s so helpful that you explained your logic for each item!
