In the words of Hannah Montana – nobody’s perfect. Even the best of us struggle with some things in life and I think we should be able to embrace the fact that we can’t be great at everything.
On a more lighthearted note, today I thought I would some beauty-related things that I cannot for the life of me grasp. Whether it’s the actual skill itself, or just some a trend I can’t pull off, here are 6 beauty things I suck at!
False Eyelashes
I do not understand how people manage to make false eyelashes look great. It’s probably due to my slightly hooded eyes, but false eyelashes seem to swallow my eyes up and look like two massive flies stuck to my face. And don’t even get me started on trying to actually get the buggers stuck to my eyes in the first place!
Full Coverage Foundation
Maybe I haven’t found the right product (or maybe I’m terrible at applying it), but I feel like full coverage foundation rarely works on my skin. Instead of providing a flawless base, most times, it just ends up looking heavy and cakey. An explanation for this is possibly due to my pale skin and the fact that it’s rare for me to find a shade that suits me perfectly. Therefore, a lighter finish blends more effortlessly into my skin and has less of a harsh, stark contrast.
Overdrawn Lips
I’m not talking about the crazy overdrawn lips, I’m talking about the trend where you ever so slightly line just outside the borders of your lips, in order to achieve a fuller pout. No matter how many times I try, I cannot do this without looking like a clown (and I’m afraid of clowns, so it’s pretty bloody terrifying).
At Home Waxing
This is probably a bit of a weird one, but every time I’ve attempted waxing at home, it ends in disaster. I’m not sure if it’s common of at home waxing kits, but I can’t seem to get them to work. I follow the instructions to a tee and I still end up with prickly legs, not to mention, sticky residue all over my legs. I’ve just accepted that I either stick to shaving or head to a salon.
Neatly Painting Nails
I’m not great at painting my nails neatly. I must admit, I have gotten A LOT better at it in recent months, I think doing my own gel manicures have helped me improve my precision. But give me a regular nail polish and I will end up with polish halfway up my arm.
Washing My Makeup Brushes
I think this is pretty common (or at least that’s what I keep telling myself to make myself feel better), but I can never be bothered to deep clean my makeup brushes. Foul, I know, but it takes FOREVER and it’s so much easier to give them a quick spot clean with a makeup wipe.
What’s something you aren’t great at?

Love the Hannah Montana reference! 🙂 I have also never found a foundation that I like. I always feel like my skin is suffocating! I just use concealer and powder now 😛 I also make a right mess when I paint my nails so I’m glad I am not alone!

I love this post! Lashes are pretty hard to grasp at first, and you really have to just find the right ones for you. I have found that the single lashes work best, that way you can just apply a few strands here and there when you want a lighter look. It’s tedious, but, you can also leave them on for a couple days instead of having to rip them off at night.
My thing I suck at is contouring. I just can’t get it to look right. I usually end up looking like some scary 80’s mashup of Tammy Faye Bakker and Miss Piggy, it’s scary. I really want to learn how, and you would think, being an artist, this would just work out for me easily, but, yeah, not so much.

Girlll this is something I can agree on! I saw your title of your post and I was like “omg I’ll be able to relate!!” I have never put on falsies tbh but they look tricky and I’d be scared if they fly off during the day! Overdrawn lips are so funny to look at, some are more ridiculous than others 🙈

I’ve never understood the overdrawn lips trend 😂

I am the same with some of these tbh! I haven’t even attempted false eyelashes because I know they wouldn’t work on my hooded eyes and I wouldn’t even bother trying😂 I am also absolutely awful at remembering to wash my brushes often which is so disgusting of me🙄😂 great post!

Thank you! I’m glad so many people agree with me about false eyelashes 😂

Love this post. I’ve watched a hundred tutorials on how to apply false eyelashes but I can’t ever get it right so I’ve just given up on it. As for applying nail polish, my left hand comes out looking great but my right looks messy

Thank you! It’s hard to paint your nails with your non dominant hand

I suck at eyeliner. So I just don’t bother even trying. I’m also not great at styling my own hair, but my ghd definitely helps.

I loved reading this and I might do my own version of this post if you don’t mind! I love beauty but I suck at SO many things, I can never get false eyelashes to stick on and I HATE washing my makeup brushes! I’m also rubbish at winged liner, I can never get them to match! If you want to try a full coverage foundation I highly recommend the NYX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, I’m super pale but they have a huge shade range so much that the palest is too light for me and it’s a great product!

I’m the same with foundation, but I found that Body Shop do a clay one that feels lovely and light. It’s not bad price-wise, so might be worth a punt?
I cannot get contouring. Don’t really care.

I’ll have to check the body shop out!

I suck at false eyelashes too, they always seem to pop up at one end and then fall off. So frustrating! xx

I love this post! One of the reasons I don’t follow a lot of beauty bloggers is because I always feel inadequate because I just cannot grasp certain things, like false eyelashes. I can’t even get the lashes out of the box – I end up tearing a load of the lashes out! It’s so refreshing to see a blogger being so honest about it. It’s a beauty post that I can finally relate to! It’s not even just lashes either, I suck at applying paint to my nails so I get my boyfriend to do them. Great post, thanks for sharing!

Aww, your comment brought a smile to my face! I really wanted to be honest about things and speak for the average person who isn’t massively skilled with makeup!

I still can’t fully master a good winged eye liner look! I think it’s my eye shaped but it just never looks right!

I love this post! Overall I’m just really bad at all beauty things, apart from neat nails. Well, only my left hand! This is a really good post and I love how you’ve opened up about beauty things you stuck at. We’re not all perfect!

I am terrible at eyeliner haha 1) I always worry about poking my eye out which is also why I can’t bring myself to wear contacts and 2) no matter what happens the second side never matches the first and trying to fix it ends up looking like i’am a goth teenager which my kids agree is not a great look for thier mom. I generally just accept that eyeliner just isn’t a skill I can master haha

Success comes with practice xx I’m also awful when it comes to washing my makeup brushes oops. I just get lazy! With full coverage foundation make sure you moisturise and prime, maybe use some lightening drops (I think body shop has them) to make your loved foundation suit your skin tone better.
Lovely post my dear xx

Totally relate with the full coverage foundation! It always looks heavy on me, never gives me flawless looking skin, instead I opt for a full coverage concealer and a medium coverage foundation!

So funny! I’m with you on the false eyelashes, though. I’ve even tried the individual lashes and I can’t get them to stick. I’ve failed at quite a few things (including the lipstick one) so I’ve just stuck with what I’m comfortable with.

I relate 100%
Especially with foundation – I find it so difficult to pick the right shade for my pale skin…. and I’m guilty of hardly ever washing brushes. Oops.

I am exactly the same with foundation! I just don’t look good with a thick layer of foundation and it always ends up cakey. I’m no beauty expert and probably doing it all wrong! But I love the Hello Happy foundation by Benefit for a lighter coverage foundation that I can just buff into my skin. 🙂

I’m awful at these things no matter how much I try as well — I can’t figure out why my foundation and concealer never look flawless and I have so many brushes because I absolutely hate washing them!
